Priyanka Chopra Jonas, born July 18 1982 is an Indian actress and singer. As both her parents worked in the military, Chopra was constantly moving around India. At the young age of 13, she was sent to the United States to study. While living with her aunt, she attended schools in Newton, Massachusetts, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, after having lived in Queens, New York as her aunt’s family also moved frequently. After three years, Chopra returned to India, finishing the senior year of her high-school education at the Army Public School in Bareilly. It was during this time that she won the local May Queen beauty pageant, after which she was pursued by admirers. This caused her family to equip their home with bars for her protection. Later, her mother entered her in the Femina Miss India contest of 2000 in which she finished second, and won the Femina Miss India World title. Chopra next won the Miss World pageant, where she was crowned Miss World 2000 and Miss World Continental Queen of Beauty – Asia and Oceania at the Millennium Dome in London. During this time, she had enrolled in college, but left after winning those titles and the recognition she got also saw her receiving offers for film roles. Thus began her acting career. Her first film casting after the Miss India World contest was as the female lead in the romantic thriller Humraaz in which she was to make her film debut. However, this fell through for various reasons. So her initial on screen debut occurred in the 2002 Tamil film Thamizhan. She then went on to make her Bollywood film debut in 2003 as the second female lead opposite Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta in the film The Hero: Love Story of a Spy. This film was one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films that year but still received mixed reviews from critics. Later that year, she appeared in Raj Kanwar’s box-office success Andaaz with Akshay Kumar, again sharing the female lead. Her performance in this film earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her rise to prominence came in the years 2005-2006 with three initial releases which were unsuccessful in the box office. However, throughout the rest of 2005 and throughout 2006 she played several roles which brought her good reviews from critics and saw her slowly rising the ranks of Bollywood. Then after several years in Bollywood, Chopra got the opportunity to branch out in American Film and Television. She signed a talent holding deal with ABC Studios and was later cast in the American thriller series Quantico as the character Alex Parrish. This series received positive reviews and saw Chopra being praised for her performance. She was also the first South Asian to headline an American network drama series. She went on to receive the People’s Choice Award for Favourite Actress in a New TV Series. She then went back to starring mostly in Bollywood. Over the years, she has also had a brief musical career as well as writing columns for the Hindustan Times. For her work, the government awarded her the Padma Shri Award in 2016. She has also been named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine and has been listed by Forbes among the world’s 100 most powerful women.
