Neena Gupta

Neena Gupta is an Indian actress and television director born on June 4, 1959. Gupta is known for her appearances in several international films, such as Gandhi in which she played the niece of Mahatma Gandhi. She also has played roles in films such as The Deceivers, Mirza Ghalib, In Custody, and Cotton Mary, etc. She also made an impression in Indian parallel cinema such as Mandi, Rihaee, Drishti, etc. These performances further established her profile in Indian movies alongside other upcoming popular Bollywood figures of the time such as Rekha, Smita Patil, and Dimple Kapadia. Despite this, Gupta never had a major commercial hit and found it difficult to find more dramatic roles. In 2017, Gupta made headlines when she shared a post on instagram asking for work, saying “I live in Mumbai and working as a good actor looking for good parts to play. Fed up with the lack of roles being written for middle-aged women in Bollywood.” After that post, she received several offers. One of the offers she accepted was Amit Sharma’s comedy-drama Badhaai Ho, which emerged as the 9th highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2018. In fact, her performance as a middle-aged pregnant mother earned widespread critical acclaim, with various critics and publications citing her performance as the film’s highlights and one of the best of her career as an actress. Other than that, Gupta has also a television career. Her big break on television came with Khandaan (1985), Yatra, as well as Gulzar’s Mirza Ghalib, which were TV miniseries. She played some roles in several TV miniseries up until the year 2004. She also went on to host the Indian version of the TV series The Weakest Link, Kamzor Kadii Kaun and also appeared in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin which gave her considerable popularity. Over the course of her career, Neena Gupta has won a total of 7 awards, and been nominated for 1, including best actress, and best supporting actress.
